Digital India

“Digital India stands on two pillars – Ease of doing business and Ease of living.” – Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaraman during budget 2023.

Digital India is a campaign started on July 1st, 2017, by our Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi with a vision to transform the country into a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy. The motto of Digital India is “POWER TO EMPOWER .”

Digital India consists of 3 core components –

  1. Delivering government services digitally.
  2.  Digitally secure and stable infrastructure
  3.  Universal Digital literacy

India ranks amongst the top 2 countries globally on the Digital adoption platform. India’s digital economy is likely to cross $1 trillion by 2025. 1200 Post office branches in rural areas have been linked electronically. An Optical fiber network of approximately two lacs has connected over 1.15 lacs Gram Panchayats under Bharatnet Programme.

The Government has emphasized on 9 Pillars of Digital India as follows –

  • Broad Band Highways
  •  Public Internet access program
  •  Information for all
  •  Easly Harvest Program
  •  IT for Jobs
  •  Electronic Manufacturing
  •  e-Kranti Electronic delivery services
  •  e-Governance
  •  Universal Access to Phones

“But still, the question arises. Are we Digital India?

Urban Educated Male section Particularly gets the most benefit from DIGITAL INDIA. Do Rural Males and Women get benefits from Digital India? Perhaps No! The majority of people are being left out. This is a DIGITAL DIVIDE.

“Only 25% of individuals using the Internet in India.” – International Telecommunication Union 2021.

Since only a few people are getting the benefits, most still need Behind. So we need to make inclusive digitalization. How?

  • Digital design with Citizens – Keeping citizens at the centre. e.g., UPI
  •  Harness local bodies to bridge the gap – ASHA workers/ ANMs in many states like Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Karnataka. They go to rural areas and make them aware of the Ministry of health and family Welfare schemes.
  •  Institutionalize Digital Development – in Denmark, there is a CITIZEN LAB that brings the Government and people to one platform so that digital development can be more inclusive.
  •  In India, NITI Aayog can take the league in bringing the Government and people to one platform.

Still, Small and Medium scale Industry people need help adopting modern technology. Where there is 25% illiteracy, the target of the high level of digital literacy is one of the biggest challenges. We need a strong anti-cybercrime team of about 1mn trained cybersecurity professionals by 2025.

The Digital India campaign is a great initiative to integrate digital technology for a better future.

Panchayati Raj Institutions, Local bodies, local NGOs, and Charitable Institutions can become a bridge between people and Government. They must be used so that services can reach people in almost every sector. The Indian Government makes this campaign inclusive, so everyone benefits from Digital India.

Digital India Mission

“I dream of Digital India where knowledge is strength and empowers people” – Narendra Modi.

On 1st July 2015, Digital India Mission was launched by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, to connect all parts of the nation with high-speed internet, especially the rural and remote parts of India.

The motto of this mission is – “power to empower.”

Therefore, Digital India Mission aims to connect all parts of India and Provide all government schemes and programs to the citizens. It was subsequently increasing digital literacy and participation of citizens through it.

In order to achieve the goal of this mission, there are three main components to it. These are –

  1. A secure, reliable infrastructure to connect the whole part of the country.
  2. E-Governance, to dispense various government schemes and make them available to citizens.
  3. Increasing the Ditial literacy of people

To meet the critical objectives of the Digital India Mission, the government has introduced initiatives that are also known to be the ‘9 pillars of Digital India Mission’. They are as follows :

  1. Broadband Highways – Under this initiative, the government connects all parts of the country with high-speed internet. It is done by providing infrastructure through the “National Optic Fibre Network.”
  2. Universal Mobile Connectivity – This connects the remaining villages and areas with a mobile network.
  3. NRIM – National Rural Internet Mission – The main objective of this initiative is to connect villages and areas with government schemes through “Common Service Centers.
  4. E-Governance – The main aims of e-Governance are to introduce a medium and an interface between the government and the citizens through various platforms such as, UIDAI, mobile apps like UMANG, Prerna Portal, etc.
  5. E-Kranti – This initiative aims to electronic delivery of government services such as Prime Minister Jan Dhan Yojana, Prime Minister Kaushal Vikas Yojana, Prime Minister Kisan Nidhi, Digi Locker, Digital Hearings, and likewise.
  6. Electronic manufacturing – Under this initiative, the government aims to ‘Net-Zero’ imports through the manufacturing of electrical and electronic goods by providing better clarity in generations, skill developments, incentives, etc.
  7. Information for All – This aims to provide citizens with government data and programs through multiple web portals and social media. Such as Press Information Bureau
  8. Training and Job Creation – Through this, the government is providing the necessary training and skill development program digitally, directly to citizens. Such program are – UDAAN, PMKVY – Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana, Rozgar Mela, etc.
  9. Early Harvest Programme – This aims to connect all Universities through e-mails. Biometric Allendance, online attendance is also introduced to various government and non-government departments.

Moreover, it is due to these initiatives under Digital India Mission that India had the basic infrastructure & digital literacy when the Covid 19 pandemic hit us.

Online transactions, which are cashless media, made the economy run as coronavirus can transmit through cash used by infected persons. Under UPI – Unified Payment Interface, the online transaction increased to 2 billion in October 2020, according to the Reserve Bank of India. This was 1 Billion transactions during the last year. Also, introducing the ‘Aarogya Setu Application helped track the infection cluster or infected people around.

The government of India introduced a Co-win web portal when the vaccines were invented for the ‘Novel Coronavirus,’ people were invented for ‘Novel Coronavirus’; people can simply register here for the date and time of vaccination Aadhar and Mobile Number while sitting at Home. This reduced the chance of spreading infection furthermore.

Though all these achievements and programs show the bright side of the Digital India Mission, some major challenges are also involved. As we all know, in today’s world, data is now a valuable thing.

However, cyber crimes, Bank fraudulent resist the progression of the Digital India Mission as people still fear losing their data to fraudsters.

Also, the lack of high-speed relative to other developed nations is a big challenge to India’s ‘digital growth.’

To put it in a nutshell, the gap between the government and citizens has been reduced through Digital India Mission.

It also assisted in providing the benefits of various government programs directly to beneficiaries, transparent and corruption-free. India has moved towards a “Robust Digital Economy” in seven and a half decades. The future of our country will depend upon how well we integrate digital solutions across platforms and lead through Digital India Mission.
