Interphase of cell division

In higher eukaryotes, life starts with forming a zygote, a combination of male and female gametes. The zygote undergoes a continuous division process and forms an embryo. The embryonic cell undergoes continuous division to form tissues and thus organs and then organs having the same function called an organ system.

A cell divides by two specific methods known as mitosis and meiosis. But before the division, the cell starts preparation of division within a particular period called Interphase. The Interphase is again divided into G1 Phase, S-Phase and G2 Phase.

Cell Division

The process by which one parent cell divides into two or more daughter cells is called cell division. At first, the cell undergoes a continuous growth period and then the DNA (genome) replicates and then the cell divides into two daughter cells.

The sequence of events by which a cell duplicates its genome, synthesizes the other constituents of the cell and eventually divides a cell into two daughter cells is termed as the Cell Cycle. A typical Eukaryotic cell divides once in 24 hours and the total duration of a human cell division is 1 hour.

What happens during Interphase of Cell division?

  • Interphase is the period of the cell cycle that takes more than 95% of the duration of the cell cycle.
  • It is the resting and preparing phase for cell division.
  • A Cell undergoes both cell growth and DNA replication during the Interphase of cell division.
DNA REPLICATION
DNA Replication is the process of copying DNA and its entire genome to its daughter cell. DNA is the genome material available on the chromosomes that takes information of a cell. The DNA Replication carries out by an enzyme called Helicase.

Interphase stages

The Interphase is divided into three stages:

  1. G1 Phase or Gap 1 Phase
  2. S-Phase or Synthesis Phase
  3. G2 Phase of Gap 2 Phase

G1 Phase of cell cycle

It is the initial phase of DNA replication where the cell continuously grows but does not replicate its DNA.

S-Phase of cell cycle

In this phase, DNA synthesis or replication takes place. The amount of chromosomes doubles on the same number of chromosomes present in the cell. Though the chromosome does not appear completely, the chromatin thread becomes prominent and chromosomes intervene with one another with duplicate genome material.

G2 Phase of cell cycle

This is the last stage of Interphase and in this phase, the cell synthesises protein for Mitosis cell division.

G0 Phase (Quiescent Stage) of cell cycle

Some cells like heart cells, do not divide or divide occasionally when need to replace injured cells or dead cells. These cells after completion of the G1 Phase, enter into an inactive stage called G0 Phase or Quiescent Phase.
