Unemployment in India

“An unemployed existence is a worse negation of life than Death itself” – Jose Ortega.

The above lines represent the term unemployment in its exact sense. Unemployment occurs when a person is actively searching for employment and cannot find any work according to their ability.

Unemployment is often used as a measure of the health of the economy. The most frequent measure of unemployment is the unemployment rate, which is the number of unemployed people divided by the number of people in the labour force.

According to NSSO, there are many kinds of unemployment in India: Disguised unemployment, seasonal unemployment, structural unemployment, cyclical unemployment, and technological unemployment. The most prevalent among the above are – Disguised and seasonal unemployment.

At present, the most threatening type in India is technological unemployment.

Technological unemployment means the loss of jobs due to changes in technology. Recently, world Bank data predicted that the proportion of jobs threatened by automation of jobs in India is 69% year on year.

The unemployment rate in India is 7.45%, with Harayana at the top. Unemployment causes multi-dimensional problems like low economic growth, a stressed and frustrated youth, family feuds, etc. In today’s scenario, unemployment is a primary reason for suicide among youth.

The recent initiatives taken by the Government to curb the problem of unemployment are – SMILE (support for marginalized individuals for livelihood and Enterprise), PM – Daksh MNREGA, PMKVY (Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojna), start-up India scheme, etc. The Government has achieved a lot through the above schemes, but there is so much left to do. The Government should promote the following:

  • Labor intensive industries
  • Decentralization of industries
  • Enhancing human capital through skill development
  • strengthening cohesion and equity in the labour market.

A nation’s growth depends upon two factors – NATURAL RESOURCES and HUMAN RESOURCES. India is abundant in both. But to make the most of natural resources, our human resources must be skilled, happy, and employed. The Government will have to take more steps to generate more employment to make the country grow multi-dimensionally.
